Multi-Instrumentalist Julian Calv Carries On The Legacy Of Moondog, Releases First Single, “Route 4”

Julian Calv was a music major recently graduated from Moravian University in Bethlehem, PA. He now resides in the art community of Woodstock, VT. Julian can occasionally be seen on Church Street in Burlington, VT, busking much in the way Moondog, aka the Viking of Sixth Avenue, had done in NYC during the 50’s and 60’s.

As a musician, Moondog was the total package. His strong rhythmic and contrapuntal pieces later influenced composers of minimal music such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. He invented musical instruments, in particular the Trimba.

After studying the avant-garde composer’s music--and even building his own one-of-a-kind Trimba--Calv is now creating his own percussion based compositions in a style reminiscent of the late composer’s.

With his first release, “Route 4,” Julian states,

“ ‘Route 4’ is an ambient percussion composition, which combines the soundscape of US Route 4 in Vermont, and hypnotic drumming.”

Deko President, Bruce Pucciarello, continues,

“Julian is an explorer of music and this, his first offering, is a transformational collection of percussive storytelling, performed on a handcrafted instrument.”

This musical piece was initially recorded at Deko’s 2Trax Studios, then finished en plein air in Vermont to capture the sounds of Route 4. “Route 4” and follow up piece “Thorn and Routes,” which is due out on March 3, will be part of a Limited Edition 7”-vinyl release coming in the spring. If you are in Burlington, VT, be sure to catch Calv as he makes regular appearances on Sundays near Church Street. If you can’t, be sure to follow him on his socials to catch some of his performances.
